Dairy products are also labeled with the farming method

As of january, large food traders in germany will start to label their milk and dairy products with the farming method of the animals as well.

The rewe group announced on tuesday that it would gradually introduce the four-stage labelling system for meat and meat products in the new year, both in rewe supermarkets and in the group’s own discount chain penny. Germany’s largest food retailer, edeka, the discount supermarket chain netto, and the grobflachen discount supermarket chain kaufland, which belongs to the schwarz group, also announced the same thing.

Thanks to the labelling of the type of farming, consumers can see at a glance when shopping how high the animal welfare level is in the husbandry of the dairy cow.

The move does not come as a surprise. Last summer, the food retail companies involved in the animal welfare initiative agreed that milk and dairy products such as cheese and yogurt could also be labeled with the farming method from 2022 onwards.
